WRITTEN BY: Jennifer Strout, Founder of MotivateU When you have a hectic schedule nothing is worse than wasting your time. You want to use your free time to be with your family and friends, or to engage in your hobbies, not to stand in line or to take part in routines that end in poor results. One of the most common experiences is ineffective exercise. I experienced the vast differences in results from receiving training from a dance teacher who could give me feedback on my performance so I could improve my training immediately instead of continuing to complete an action incorrectly resulting in reinforcing poor results. Alternatively, in the 90s I used to pop the exercise videos into the VHS. I would replicate the movements the best I could but I knew I was off, WAY OFF! But I didn’t know when I was off and I definitely didn’t know when to try to fix it, and I didn’t know if when I tried to adjust my movements if I was making it better or worse. I would get frustrated because the trainer on the video said that I would be and SHOULD be seeing specific results, which I didn’t. But was it my fault? The trainers said I had to do the exercises correctly to see results but how was I to know if I was? They were the experts on their workouts, not me! Fast forward to the present. I am currently a working mom of two boys, busy is a word that doesn’t even begin to describe my reality. And as someone who likes achieving and seeing results the issue of wasting time is even more relevant now that I have children I want to spend more time with. When it comes to exercise, I tried going back to the gym after having kids, but the commute and the childcare struggles quickly proved to add more stress than the exercise itself was reducing. Not to mention that I couldn’t spend 2 ½ hours every day for only a 40 minute workout- yes, with traffic and getting the children ready to leave for the gym and settled at childcare, that was the reality! But I also didn’t want to continue to workout with the modern day version of the exercise tape- streaming videos that offered me NO feedback. Simply another ineffective use of time. If only I could get real-time feedback on my form and performance at every moment of a workout, both when I had a live trainer AND when I was exercising at some odd hour because of my adulting schedule with an on-demand video. If only I could get real-time feedback on my form and performance at every moment of a workout, both when I had a live trainer AND when I was exercising at some odd hour because of my adulting schedule with an on-demand video. Knowing just how important exercise is for both my physical and mental health, not to mention productivity, memory and focus, I decided to make my desire a reality because I knew I wasn’t the only one facing these issues.
