Other Products on the Market for Virtual Workouts
[What I enjoy least is the] “time commitment, trying to fit it into the day... to fit in time to drive to the gym, etc. In a group you get pushed by others to do more. [It’s] easier to give up when working alone alone when it gets hard.”
—Chris M., Business student |
“I imagine the equipment is very heavy and hard to set up and its expensive, [like with] Peloton - I [also] don’t feel like I want to pay the monthly fee for the equipment ….COVID era is definitely dangerous and I don’t want to go in gyms.”
— Qi Z., Biomedical engineer |
“Keeping a fitness routine can be difficult sometimes.”— Matthew S., Hockey rink manager
“I don’t enjoy doing a lot of exercising by myself.” — Diane S., Executive assistant |

Goal Setting with Jack & Jill
Before using a goal setting app...
Jack starts out walking 8000 steps/day.
Jack was a runner in high school. His work has cut into his free time and he wants to get back into shape. Jill walks 4,000 steps/day.
Jill is a working mom of two. Her youngest just turned 1 last week and she wants to get serious about the basics such as getting consistent steps in. |
What do you think will happen with the solutions that are currently available on the market? Will Jack reach his goal? Will Jill reach her goal? Will they both?
The app asks Jack what his goal is and he inputs 10k steps/day. The app never asks him what his starting point or baseline is. The app asks Jill what her goal is and she inputs 8k steps/day. The app never asks her what her starting point or baseline is. |
By the end of week 1:
Jack continues to be busy at work and he misses hitting his goal by 1k steps but he’s still feeling confident because he’s ranking pretty high on the leaderboard with an average of 9k steps/day.
Jill struggles to find the time for herself but sets a 30 minutes aside during her lunch break to try to get closer to her goal. The first week she has also increased her step count by 1k steps/day to an average of 5k steps/day. But she is low on the leaderboard and feeling discouraged. |
By the end of week 3:
Jack is still at 9k steps but remains around the same spot on the leaderboard. As a result he’s not feeling enough motivation to make any additional change.
Jill is completely discouraged, despite adding an additional 1k steps for a total increase of 2k steps she is still far lower on the leaderboard than her colleague Jack. In fact, Jack was already beating her before they even started because his baseline was her final goal. Jill never stood a chance. |
By day 30, both Jack and Jill have stopped using the app.
Now let's try this again with MotivateU's app Instead of ranking individuals on the leaderboard based on a raw number score, with MotivateU's app individuals are ranked based on relative progress towards their goals.
Jack sets his starting point at 8k steps/day and takes the suggested 50% increase for a goal of 12k steps/day. Jill sets her starting point at 4k steps/day and takes the suggested 50% increase for a goal of 6k. |
By the end of week 1: Jack hits 9k steps/day - increasing his steps by an average 1k/day, 25% of his goal.
Jill hits 5k- increasing her steps by an average 1k/day, 50% of her goal. Jack is encouraged but knows he can do better. Jill is thrilled to see herself moving up the leaderboard and feels the momentum. |
By the end of week 3: Jack has decided it’s time to step it up. He kicks it into gear and hits 11k steps/day - 75% of his goal for the month.
Jill is now hitting 100% of her goal. She is thrilled and loves all of the encouragement and high fives from the community. She starts planning what goals she is going to work on next. |
With the help of MotivateU, by the end of the month both Jack and Jill have reached their goals and have added new members to their community to help spread the support.
